Are You A Hidden Creative?
If I were to ask you what you thought makes a person creative, what would your answer be - someone who can draw, someone who can paint? What if I were to tell you that those first thoughts you have of a creative person are only just the beginning to what being a creative is all about, and that up until now - you may not have even thought that YOU are a creative… Let me enlighten you 🙂
Welcome to Episode 17!
Would it shock you if I told you that I know a creative person who is an accountant? He works with numbers all day, and yet has the most creative way of thinking. I also know a creative who’s entire business is about hiring out vehicles, and yet her thoughts on how to change BIG problems in regional areas are incredibly creative. I also know a creative who is a town planner. I know him very well. He works behind a computer, fixing problems, lodging paperwork, dealing with clients who are always on the attack, and yet none of them would know he comes home to build incredible things out of timber and paints miniatures with such fine detail!
The world is full of hidden creatives, even you are a creative even if you don’t think it, and I know this because you are listening to this podcast. Every single day we walk past someone not even knowing what’s going on in their mind. The ideas that are forming. The dreams that are building. The thoughts that are impacting a community, the world.
So why do we fall short in identifying what a creative really is? And why do we only save that term for someone who can draw or paint?
It’s no surprise that this is the case. I mean, those are the physical attributes we associate with being creative. But, it is the thoughts that swirl around in someone's mind that makes them a true creative. And if you have a desire to own your own business, that immediately makes you part of the club.
I believe that anyone who has a desire to own their own business is a creative. Because it means that you don’t fit the mould. You want to do things your way, which is different to the rest. And to do this you need to think creatively.
When you’re a business owner, you have to brand yourself - come up with a business name, logo, symbols, colours, personality - I mean you can hire someone to do this for you. But YOU are the person who had the idea in the first place.
When you are a business owner you need to market yourself. You need to explain to the world what you do, why you do it, who you help and how you help them. Oh, and I wont forget to mention that you need to do this both in person and online. On top of that you need to do it in a creative way so that you stand out from the rest, set yourself apart and make yourself different to others in your industry.
When you’re a business owner you need to sell in a way that is aligned with your values and goals and the values and goals of your client. So you need to think creatively. You also work with customers every single day which means that you will have multiple different problems told to you and you will need to think of different ways for how your solution is the right solution for them.
See where I am going with this? You may not know how to draw, but when it comes to being a creative you tick the box with the way you think.
When I was in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I left. I mean rewind the clock to my primary days and I wanted to be all sorts of things. A palaeontologist, a police officer. But when it came to actually leave school, I had no idea. So a teacher of mine sat me down to do this test. It was the be all and end of all of tests that would tell me what I needed to pursue when I left school. It was a multiple choice and at the end it gave me one answer… I should be a journalist.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t an option to be a creative. It didn’t even exist. And it made me feel like there was something wrong with me because I didn’t fit the mould. Because my career path wasn’t in any of the options in front of me.
But, over the years, I have realised that this is actually my superpower, and it’s yours too. Because I am also guessing that you may have also been told you talk too much in class, or you didn’t concentrate enough. But this was your ideas making their way into the world. People just didn’t know they needed to listen.
Creatives have the power to change the world. You have that power. But, it means nothing if you don’t own your superpower and step into your strengths. So, I will ask you this. Are you a hidden creative?
Are you someone who has a journal (or google doc) full of ideas?
Do you lie awake at night because your head is buzzing?
Do you talk too much about something you’re passionate about?
Do you annoy those closest to you with yet another crazy thought that you could pursue?
Do you have a desire to impact? To make a change? To do something different? To path the way?
Do you want to help others?
If you can’t draw, or if you can - either way, if you own your own business, have a desire to start one, or aspire to bring your ideas to life - it is this that makes you a creative and YOU dear listener have the power to change the world. Don’t ever sell yourself short.
Now, when someone asks me, what do I do, my answer is this. I am Taylah, a Wife, a Mumma, a photographer, a business coach and a creative. And if it isn’t in the selection choices, I make my own box :)
